Mercè Galí – Illustrator

I grew up surrounded by poetry and storybooks at my parent’s bookshop, in Gràcia neighbourhood, in Barcelona. The book store became a hiding place where to devour pictures in silence.

Singing, dancing, touching, …are all means of expression which inspire me. But drawing has always been my personal way to express myself.

Spontaneous trace, painting stains, collage, photography, playing with fate is what interests me the most, as well as pursuing the maximum expressivity through simplicity. I appreciate the sense of humour and I do my best to take imagination one stage further from the text so as to make the reader smile with complicity.

I studied illustration at “La Llotja” in Barcelona and Fine Arts at University of Barcelona, within the speciality of engraving.

I am mainly focused on illustration for children and the youth for several publishers and publications such as Cavall Fort, a magazine which I have been reading since I was a child. I also illustrate posters and programmes for several communication campaigns in the cultural field.

Currently, I combine book illustration with teaching, giving out art workshops for children and engraving lessons for adults at Manolo Hugué state School of Art.

At the same time, I am getting into the creative world of the artist book and engraving within various personal and group projects, and I also take part in some illustration and artist book exhibitions.
